In the nearer term, they say, one step that must be taken is to make military retirees pay more out of pocket for their health care benefit. More TRICARE Sets Gray Area Retiree Premiums Last year Congress approved the creation of the TRICARE Reserve Retired program, a premium-paid TRICARE Standard coverage plan for "gray area" Reserve retirees. The program is planned to start in October. More New AF Uniform The Air Force's new, improved physical training uniform has many improvements from the current PTU. The T-shirt is now available in a 100 percent polyester long sleeve and poly/cotton blend short sleeve. More AAFES Back 2 School 4 Less With school just around the corner, many states are beginning to promote their "Back to School Sales Tax Holidays," which features tax-free shopping for specified items. More DoDEA High School Goes Online This school year, the Department of Defense Education Activity has unveiled some new initiatives. More AF Academy Instructors Sought Opportunities are available for active duty officers to apply for U.S. Air Force Academy instructor vacancies for the 2011-2012 academic year. More Marine Corps Social Media Guidelines The Marine Corps has recently established new guidelines for personal use of the social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. More New Support -- AfterDeployment.org In a recent episode of the program Dot Mil Docs, Dr. Robert Ciulla of the National Center for Telehealth & Technology discussed AfterDeployment.org, a website full of resources for servicemembers facing various post-deployment issues. More Move.mil Redesigns Website Officials at the U.S. Transportation Command have launched an improved website at www.Move.mil to assist both the military and Transportation Service Providers in using the Defense Personal Property System. More VA Health Care Application Made Easier The Department of Veterans Affairs has removed the signature requirement for Veterans who electronically submit an online 10-10EZ "Application for Health Benefits." More Stop-Loss Pay Available Thousands of current and former Airmen remain eligible to receive $500 in retroactive special pay for each month they were affected by stop loss. Airmen have until Oct. 21 to apply through the Air Force Personnel Center. More The Lavelle Affair and the Afghan War It took nearly 40 years, but the nation is finally trying to right a wrong done to an Air Force General who was victimized by an anti-Vietnam agenda, partisan politics and the media tornado that can sometimes viciously sweep good leaders into its turbulent maw and deposit them shattered and broken in the blink of an eye. More VA Ordered to Release Agent Orange Rule A coalition of veterans' service organizations won their case to force the VA to issue a final regulation authorizing payment of claims for ischemic heart disease, Parkinson's disease, or B-cell leukemia for any veteran who stepped foot in Vietnam during the war, or their survivors. More Gulf War Illness Hearings Held A subcommittee of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs recently conducted the third hearing in a series of Oversight and Investigations hearings focused on Gulf War Illness. More Free Suicide Prevention Webinar SOS is a nationally recognized suicide prevention and depression screening program designed for middle and high school students. More Gulf War: The 20th Anniversary On Aug. 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, initiating the first Gulf War. By June 1991, 697,000 men and women had served in what became Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. More Job Program Helps Wounded Vets The Recovery and Employment Assistance Lifelines program helps wounded servicemembers and veterans to transition back into the civilian sector. More Navy Ships Agent Orange Exposure List The Department of Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension Service has issued two lists of naval vessels it has verified conducted operations on the inland "brown water" rivers and delta areas of Vietnam. More Changes in Navy Tuition Program The U.S. Navy recently changed its Tuition Assistance policy, which now grants funding on a first-come first-serve basis, with money that is replenished every fiscal quarter instead of each fiscal year. More Child Care Fee Policy Announced The Department of Defense has announced the school year 2010/2011 child care fee policy. Changes will impact families who have children enrolled in DoD child development centers and school age care programs. More Family Loan Locker at Camp Lejeune For the Marines, Sailors and their families who PCS to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, the Relocation Assistance Program offers the Loan Locker, a free service that accommodates families with the necessary items they will need for up to 30 days, or until all their household goods arrive. More New AAFES Home Services The Army & Air Force Exchange Service recently initiated its Exchange Home Services program. This new initiative allows military families in the continental United States to go online to compare local offerings for TV, internet and telephone, individually or bundled, to ensure they are receiving the best deals in their area. More New Blog Launched A new Defense Department blog seeks to bring "lessons learned" to an accessible online platform. Titled "In Their Own Words: Lessons Learned in Today's Military," the blog aims to provide a platform for servicemembers, veterans and families to share their thoughts and experiences on a variety of topics. More Anti-Terrorism Awareness Month The Department of the Army declared August 2010 as the Army's Anti-terrorism Awareness Month. During August, the Army will promote heightened awareness and vigilance. More AAFES Patriotic Pet Contest The Army & Air Force Exchange Service is sponsoring the "Patriot Pet Just Say 'Treat'" photo contest for military pets and their owners.
